Sri Lanka: OK, so we arrived in Sri Lanka on the 18th of Feb. Two days later went on a four day tour of the country including a safari, Ella Gap, Nuwara Eliya and two nights in Kandy. Extraordinary country! Our guides Ekka and Sana From Diddi Group drove us around these four days in their minibus. The tour was well priced and definitely worth it. The only downsides where; the incredibly bumpy roads, which got Jessica airborne a couple of times, the price hike as soon as they saw that you’re white, the remaining evidence of the civil war, the dangerous drivers (which includes everyone) and did I mention the bumpy roads? Even after spending five months in Asia, I still found that I’ve never been so scared in a car. Usually you can surrender yourself to it in about ten minutes and accept the fact that you’ll probably die a horrible and fiery death at any moment, but not in Sri Lanka. The best you could hope for is to gain that Ostrich mentality and close your eyes until you get to where ever you may be attempting to go. What you can’t see can’t hurt you… Hm try thinking that when your hurtling around the edge of a thousand foot cliffs on a narrow two lane road (after passing a dozen landslides already) with a bus coming toward you and a truck over taking you. That’s not the end of it. Right when you’re tensing your already sore stomach muscles to their limit, the bar your gripping with your sweaty hand feels like it’s going to buckle, you’re about to go for the seatbelt for the hundredth time but can’t move because you’re using every ounce of your mental energy to will the car through this next hurdle, then you remember there is none anyway. And just as you’re about to kiss your sorry ass goodbye, your tour driver sees a temple in the distance and takes both hands off the wheel to say a prayer! That’s Sri Lanka traffic. It’s not an isolated incident. This happened every few minutes for four days straight. But have a look at the pictures and you will see we had a great time in Sri Lanka, and would definitely recommend a holiday there! After some small repairs on the boat we left Sri Lanka on the 1st of March and headed for the Maldives. ‘Gallery 1’ are pictures from our tour of the country and ‘Gallery2’ are some pictures from Sri Lanka, and our doomed voyage to the Maldives. You can read more about that in the next article in the Maldives.
